What is VectorVest?
If you came here searching for a VectorVest review, you are probably already familiar with the platform. Vectorvest is an automated stock market research platform that provides subscribers in-depth market analytics and timing tools for position and intraday trading and portfolio management. The platform can seem overwhelming at first and takes some time to get acclimated to, but the training videos and tutorials are helpful. The software scans over 20,000 stocks (in 8 global equity markets) automatically and provides buy, sell and hold recommendations with additional value, safety and timing ratings processed using 41 parameters in its algorithm. It also takes market timing into account as it updates its ratings as market conditions change. The platform is powerful and provides a ton of ideas for trades.
Is VectorVest Worth the Money?
VectorVest offers $9.95 trial periods ranging from 30-days for the RealTime plan to five-week trials for the End of Day and IntraDay plans. Exchange fees are additional for the RealTime plan. The plans resume normal pricing after the trial period which ranges from $69 a month for end-of-day tools, $89 a month for 15-minute delayed tools and $129 a month for real-time analysis and market timing tools. Discounted pre-payment plans are available at $695, $895 and $1,295 for the EOD, IntraDay and RealTime plans. VectorVest 7 Platform and Features Review
The basic VectorVest subscription platform has fundamental and technical analysis tools and analytics. The platform also allows users to devise their own strategies utilizing many of the unique tools complete with backtesting capabilities. From the get-go, users get a market snapshot on the home page showing which stocks carry the highest ratings according to VectorVest’s proprietary ratings system. The platform also tracks the Buy, Sell and Hold recommended stocks along with a unique Market Timing gauge that indicates general market sentiment and trading climate. Of the proprietary metrics, the VST (Value, Safety, Timing) is ValueVest’s way of rating the best stocks with higher values indicating a better investment potential. The top VST stocks are displayed right on the homepage.
VectorVest was rated as one of the top technical analysis tools by Investopedia.
The platform uses graphs with pre-configured strategy layouts including Midas Touch for longer-term ideas and GLB which is a real-time layout. The Enhanced Protrader Timing Layout adds momentum indicators like DPO and MACD. The Acid Test layout uses moving averages to visualize the trends and support/resistance levels. Users can also manually draw in trend lines and add various basic indicators to enhance the charts.
Unlike traditional platforms, such as ThinkOrSwim, VectorVest incorporates many proprietary scanning tools. This platform uses a ton of different qualitative and quantitative ratios. Many of them are exclusive to VectorVest users only like the VST. Some other ratios include RS (relative safety), RT (relative timing), RV (relative value). Users can sort through the tracking list of stocks to find candidates based on the various metrics and rankings. Once you find some stocks of interest, you can then select various strategies to apply. If you want to go primarily with a strategy-based trade rather than stock specific, you can sort by strategies as well. Each of the trading strategies come with a detailed step-by-step “Daily Action Plan” where they provide a menu of stocks and the gameplan to trade them.
The platform lets you backtest their trading systems to gauge how they performed historically. The various trading systems including Sure-Fire Success, Low-Priced spikes, Power Moves III or Midas Touch Challenge stocks can be tested and compared to see which system performed better historically to get an idea of which will perform better moving forward. Users can select the range of dates.
Scanners & Trading Alerts
The whole platform is literally a pre-configured scanning tool. Let’s be honest. Most of us don’t really devise or need complex scans. The beauty of VectorVest is that it scans according to proven strategies on behalf of the user. It tracks 7,00-8,000 stocks constantly and alerts us when conditions change. It takes a huge amount of the legwork out of the equation. Users can then follow through with the step-by-step strategy execution or run the stock through their own trading methodology.
Order Entry/Compatible Brokers
The VestorVest platform can be linked to one of the recommended brokers to execute trades. There is also an add-on called Robo Trader that can automate the trades directly with your online broker. Right now, VectorVest is somewhat limited in the brokers it integrates with for order entry. You can use TradeKing, Interactive Brokers, and QuestTrade.
The platform has a ton of pre-configured watch lists that users can follow. The platform really does a great job of taking the grunt work out of finding stocks. The watch lists are categorized by strategy based on VectorVest’s proprietary algorithms. Naturally, you can create your own watch lists as well.
VectorVest goes a fine job of providing training tutorials and videos. Lessons can be quickly found on the Training Tab which includes compelling lessons like “30-second stock analysis”, “cherry-picking checklist” and “weed your portfolio”. The lessons are easy to follow and very well executed to save time.
VectorVest packs a wallop of features, strategies and analytics. They do an excellent job of literally handholding users through the whole process with step-by-step details of each strategy and providing buy, sell and stop recommendations complete with tutorials. This research platform is one of the most concise user-friendly tools on the market. As long as the user is willing to put in the time and effort to go through the tutorials, they will benefit and learn a lot in the process.
What Type of Trader is VectorVest Best For?
This platform is uniquely suited for newbies to the most experienced traders. Although there are intra-day features, it primarily favors swing, position and portfolio traders and self-directed investors. I love how it provides you with a game plan on tackling each strategy with the options of combining and overlapping lists and strategies. The potential is immense as long as the trader applies discipline and risk management. By the way, there are a ton of tools and tutorials on prudent risk and money management as well. While it may seem intimidating when you first run it, everything is well designed and explained thoroughly through the tutorials.
Alternatives to VectorVest
VectorVest is an interesting platform in the sense that it simplifies investing analysis whilst still maintaining some of the “confusing” components, like charts and data analyses. Accordingly, the platform seems to attract a broad range of users.
Some users are long-term investors who simply want investment advice and recommendations. On the flipside, some users have more of a “trading” mentality and prefer to use the platform for shorter-term trading opportunities. Before evaluating alternatives, you should figure out which category you are in.
If you are simply looking for stock recommendations, you can’t go wrong with Motley Fool. For only $99/year, you will get stock picks every month – no complicated analyses, just buy and sell alerts.
If you are looking to generate new trade ideas on a regular basis, look no further than Trade Ideas. Trade Ideas is a real-time stock scanner with pre-built scans that help you find momentum, breakouts and more. This type of scanner is ideal for active traders who trade daily.
If you are looking for a tool that can analyze a stock and tell you whether it’s a “buy” or “sell,” we don’t have any solid recommendation. Quite frankly, these types of tools are hardly accurate over the long run. An automated technical analysis tool will miss fundamental factors and a fundamental analysis tool will miss technical factors (of course, both will miss “black swans” and surprises). You should never buy or sell a stock simply because it passed an automated analysis. Do your own research across multiple platforms. MarketBeat can provide some great information on analyst ratings and insider trading activity, TradingView can provide some automated technical insights, and IBD can combine the two for a CANSLIM analysis.
